Hendricks A. Hallett was born on July 20, 1847 in Charlestown, MA. He was the son of James H. and Mary A. (Arnold) Hallett. He studied painting domestically, as well as in Antwerp and Paris. Hallett developed a reputation as a distinguished marine, landscape, and historical painter.
Hallett was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society of Water Color Painters, where he served as a member of the exhibition committee. He exhibited at the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association in 1892 (medal), the Boston Art Club (1877-1909), the J. Eastman Chase Gallery in Boston (1886), and the Jordan Marsh Gallery (1896-1897). He also exhibited frequently at the Poland Spring Art Gallery over a 20-year period.
Many of Hallett’s seascapes are of Boston Harbor and Mount Desert, ME. During his career, he maintained art studios at various Boston locations including: 42 Court Street (Adam’s Express Building), 110 Tremont Street (Studio Building), and 30 Ipswich Street (204 Fenway Studios). For many years, Hallett made his home in Chelsea with his wife Florence.
Following a brief illness, on March 17, 1921, Hallett died in his Tremont Street studio. Funeral services were held on March 19th at the Church of the New Jerusalem on Bowdoin Street, with Reverend Hay officiating. Hallett is buried in the Cambridge Cemetery, 76 Coolidge Avenue, Cambridge, MA.
