Aaron Draper Shattuck was born in Francestown, NH, in 1832. Shattuck studied in both Boston and New York City with Alexander Ransom. In 1856 he was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design. He summered in Conway that same year. He returned to Conway in 1857, settling in an old farm house near the Moat Mountain House. He became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1861.
His specialty was New England landscapes, often of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He also painted barnyard scenes of cattle and sheep on his farm in Granby, CT.
His paintings today hang in several major museums, including the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY.
On July 30, 1928, Aaron Draper Shattuck died at his home in Granby, CT. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the National Academy of Design. Shattuck is buried in Granby Cemetery, Granby, CT.

In the death of Aaron D. Shattuck in his home in Granby, Conn., July 30 the National Academy of Design loses its dean and oldest member. Mr. Shattuck was in his 97th year. He was elected to full membership in the National Academy in 1861.
Born in Francestown, N.H., in 1832, Mr. Shattuck at the age of 18 went to Boston to pursue his study of art under Alexander Ransom. Later he went to New York where he entered the schools of the Academy of Design and was of that coterie of young artists who brought to the public eye the beauty of the White Mountains and New England scenery. In 1868 he purchased a farm of 28 acres in Granby where he kept cattle and sheep from which many of his studies were made for the paintings that were unexcelled.
Mr. Shattuck in 1860 was married to Marian Colman, daughter of Samuel Colman, Sr., and a sister of Samuel Colman, a noted painter and member of the National Academy. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, William, Walter and Edwin H. Shattuck all of Granby, Conn., and three daughters, Isabel Colman Shattuck, of Granby, Mrs. Fred B. Griffin of Hartford, and Mrs. John P. Steward of Windsor, Conn., 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
