Although William Paskell painted Mount Kearsarge many times, it is interesting to speculate on the history of these two paintings. They have identical canvases and frames. Perhaps Paskell set out to paint Mount Kearsarge during the four seasons of a single year? It would be interesting to locate the paintings of the other two seasons.

Although not dated, these paintings are typical of Paskell's later style, with broad brush strokes used to create an impressionistic feeling. The spring scene is from a slightly different spot than the fall view. Apple trees dot the banks of the Saco, and a large tree obscures the view of Mount Bartlett on the left shoulder of Mount Kearsarge. In both, Paskell paints the subtle reflections of the trees in the water. Note the diagonal clouds entering the scene from the upper right, a characteristic of many of Paskell's paintings.

Be sure to compare these paintings to one of Paskell's earlier works in this exhibition, Mount Chocorua.
