Mount Chocorua

John White Allen
Scott
Oil on canvas, 30" x 50"
S/D/L/R 1880
| Although other large paintings by John White Allen Scott have been
documented, this painting, 30 x 50 inches, was clearly a major work. Chocorua
was a favorite subject of White Mountain painters, second only to Mount Washington. The
massive shape of the mountain with its distinctive summit, the open midground, and the
brilliant fall colors of the foreground combine to captivate and hold the viewers
attention. Scott often painted gray, cloud-filled skies with light shining through in one
area. This composition, or "characteristic," can be seen in many Scott
paintings. |
