Incomparable Scenery
Comparative Views in the White Mountains
The Belknap Mill Society
Sunday, August 15, 1999 through Thursday, September 30, 1999
[Directions
and Hours] [Order the Catalog]
Welcome to
our exhibition of Incomparable Scenery. This exhibition contains twenty-five fine
examples of 19th century landscape paintings of White Mountain scenes by fourteen
different artists. With the exception of the single painting at the entrance to the
gallery, there are ten groupings of two, three, and four paintings placed together for
comparative purposes. Each grouping is of a well-known view within the White
Mountains. These views are represented by different artists or, sometimes, by the
same artist during a different season or at a different time in his career. Although
each grouping is accompanied with a brief comparative narrative, we encourage you, the
viewer, to form your own opinion of these works, their interpretation, artistic technique,
and feeling.
We live in a state blessed with magnificent scenery from the ocean coast to the rugged
north country. How fortunate we are that many artists recognized the uniqueness of
New Hampshire and, in particular, the White Mountains. These artists created a
legacy that survives to this day. This exhibition will present many fine examples of
their paintings of our Incomparable Scenery.
