Edmund Darch Lewis (1835 – 1910)

edl.jpg (7232 bytes)Edmund Darch Lewis was born in Philadelphia on October 17, 1835 to a successful, well-connected family.  He studied with Paul Weber from 1850 to 1855.  Lewis first exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1854.   He was elected an Associate of the Pennsylvania Academy in 1859.  Lewis sent his paintings for exhibition to the Boston Athenaeum, the National Academy of Design, and the Boston Art Club.  He painted in the White Mountains in the 1860's and 1870's.   He became best known for his marine watercolors.  He was also a noted furniture and china collector.

A fine example of the work of Lewis is on display -- Moat Mountain.
