Glossary - Oil on Canvas

Canvas is the "foundation" upon which the paint, in this case "oil paint," is applied.  Canvas is somewhat porous, and this makes it an ideal surface for paint to adhere.  After the paint drys, varnish is often applied to aid in the painting's preservation.  Oil paintings on canvas can last for hundreds of years.  However, canvas may become brittle or torn through time.  Also, varnish can become discolored, dirty with grime, or both.  In this case, proper restoration is appropriate.
