William H. Thwaites (active 1854-1871)William H. Thwaites was an engraver, designer, illustrator, and landscape painter. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1854, 1858, and 1860. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association from 1868 to 1871. The Crayon in November 1856 noted: "Mr. W. H. Thwaites has returned from a tour of study in the White Mountains, and has brought with him a number of carefully studied drawings in watercolors and sepia, heightened with pencil. Mr. T's ability with watercolors should make his works much sought after as are his designs on wood." Thwaites was living in New York City from 1854 to 1860. He was living in London in 1863. His work is reproduced in Beyond the Mississippi. He exhibited Conway Ledge at the National Academy of Design in 1860. He exhibited The White Mountains at the National Academy of Design watercolor show in 1867-68. References |
