Albert Fitch Bellows (1829-1883)

Bellows was apprenticed to a Boston lithographer at the age of 16.  He studied architecture in 1845 and set up an architectural partnership which was dissolved in 1849.  After serving as the principal of the New England School of Design from 1850 to 1856, Bellows studied art in Paris and Antwerp.  A pioneer in watercolor, he wrote a book on art.  Unfortunately, most of his work was destroyed in the Great Fire of Boston in 1872.

He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1861 to 1883 and was a member of the Century Association from 1865 to 1883.
